Cheektowaga is a town in Erie County, NY with a population of 86,983. Its earliest known occupants were members of various Native American tribes. The Iroquois people are the ones who gave the town its name—"Chictawauga”—which translates to “Land of the Crabapples” in the Seneca language. European-American settlers did not occupy the land until after the Revolutionary War.
